The maritime industry needs more than advanced technology and modern vessels. It also needs skilled people who want to learn, take responsibility and grow over time.
At TeamTec, maritime apprenticeship programs are an important part of that work.
By giving young people hands-on experience in production, testing and workshop operations, we help build practical competence for the future – while creating opportunities for long-term careers in the maritime industry.
One example is Erik Westbø.
Looking for more than just a job
For many young people, choosing where to start their career is a big decision. It is not only about finding a job – it is about finding a place where you can learn, grow and feel part of something meaningful.
That is exactly what Erik was looking for when he started searching for a maritime apprenticeship.
“I looked at different companies while I was in school, trying to find somewhere I could learn more about the field I had chosen. TeamTec stood out because of the products and the opportunities within offshore and maritime technology,” he says.
Today, Erik is one of several apprentices helping build future competence at TeamTec through the company’s maritime apprenticeship program.
No two days are the same
At TeamTec, apprentices are not placed on the sidelines. From an early stage, they become part of the daily work in production, workshop and testing.
For Erik, that is one of the things he enjoys the most.
“A normal workday can be very different from one day to the next. I can spend one part of the day assembling, then welding, testing products or preparing parts for production. The next day I can be machining components in Tvedestrand,” he explains.
The variation gives apprentices the chance to build practical experience across multiple areas:
Welding
Assembly
Machining
Testing
Production preparation
For many young people considering a maritime apprenticeship, this type of hands-on experience is an important part of developing both technical skills and confidence.
At the same time, apprentices learn something equally important: how quality, teamwork and responsibility are part of everyday work in maritime industry.
Trust creates confidence
One thing Erik highlights several times is the amount of trust he has been given.
“As an apprentice, you are not supposed to have that much responsibility. But I feel like I have been trusted with responsibility here, and I really appreciate that,” he says.
That trust has helped him become more independent and confident in his work.
“I have learned a lot since starting at TeamTec. I have become more precise, better at mechanical work and much more independent.”
For TeamTec, this is an important part of developing future competence through maritime apprenticeship opportunities: giving young employees the opportunity to contribute, learn and grow through real tasks and real projects.
Learning beyond the workshop
Some of the most valuable learning experiences happen outside normal routines.
One of Erik’s strongest memories so far was joining a three-day trip to Sweden, where TeamTec dismantled and transported equipment for one of its projects.
